Could I please get a clarification of some terms I see in some of my ancestor's service records from the Civil War? I know it'll be something I should know, but I'd rather be embarassed to ask a simple question than perpetrate incorrect info in my database, lol.
My question is in regards to "enlistment date" and "mustered in date. What exactly is the difference between the two, and why do they often overlap?
An example with one ancestor's records I'm dealing with now, from the CSA records is this: His muster cards show an enlistment date of 20 Feb 1864 in Gordonsville, Virginia. Another card shows that he appeared on a company muster roll from 31 Dec 1863 to 30 Apr 1864, mustered into service at Columbia, SC.
That example, as you all probably already know, isn't uncommon in the documents I find in Civil War soldiers. So I know I just need someone to clarify for me why the differences in time/location.
