You may be confusing two different, but related, people:

John Breckinridge (1760-1806) was a US Attorney General, but was not a General (military), and I don't belive he had C. as a middle initial.

John Cabell Breckinridge (1821-1875) was a grandson of the above John Breckinridge, and was a member of Congress, US Vice President, Confederate General, and Secretary of War for the CSA.
