Mr. Beery,
Glad you brought this up, because it's been on my mind for a long time now and there are some things about this which we all ought to have discussed and investigated but haven't.

For one thing, the book in which Adam's and John's birthdates are entered is inscribed with the owner's name, which, if memory serves, is "Heinrich Kabbis". At least one book on German surnames which I have read says that this name means Cabbage, but even if it didn't, there still would be reason to assume that this is where Cabbage started, as explained later.

Thus, we have a book recording the birthdates of John and Adam, and the owner's name was, translated to English, Henry Cabbage. Why would this be anyone but their father? If it were a grandparent, wouldn't he have entered information for his own children as well? Most importantly of all, WHERE and ON WHAT DATE was this book published? The closer it is in date to the dates of birth, the more postive is the identification of the owner of the book as their father, and the place of publication could also be a clue as to the location of the family at that time. It would also give a proven date at which this Heinrich Kabbis had to have been alive. He couldn't have written his name in the book if he was dead! Furthermore, if the book were published in Pennsylvania, it would prove that Heinrich had lived there.

There is a tax record in Tennessee for the Cabbages which has the name as "Capish". This is a fair rendering in English of the German Kabbis. As I said earlier, then, there would still be reason to believe that Cabbage started out as something like Kabbis.

Will of Catherine Cappis, seamstress, of Vincent, Chester Co., PA, dated 16 January 1764, probated 24 February 1764. Mentions brother Henry, sister Mary Wealds, appoints Casper Snyder executor. Witnessed by Thomas Schneider and George Yarger. Filed as #55 in Philadelphia Will Book N, page 1486.

Re this will: if Henry were living anywhere but Chester Co., it seems likely to me that that would be stated in the will. Note also, that if Henry is Adam and John's father, they also had an aunt named Mary Wealds, a possible point to investigate.

There is a passenger list for Philadelphia, 1754, which includes one Heinrich Cappes. Again, from memory, I believe the passengers were identified as being from Darmstatt and Zweibrucken.

To sum up, it seems to me that the most important thing which anyone could do as a starting point is to find out when and where the aforementioned book was published. The book has a PROVEN connection to Adam and John, and anything it can tell us is immediately relevant. I am not a German scholar, but I can understand enough of it that I could make out a city and date. Problem is, something that old shouldn't be exposed to strong light, so it should be examined by someone on the spot. I don't know who currently owns it, but I'm assuming that someone does.
