Phyllis:
Here is the latest I have discovered after a very difficult
painstaking search. Several Cabbage family members had indicated that there might be Indian blood in the family. I didn't think much about this at first. However, when i checked the 1840 & 1850 census' I found Rev John Cabbage, my gr gr gr grandfather, but his wife, Nancy Barrow, and my gr gr grandfather, James Cabbage were not. I thought this odd because other families were listed. Then it dawned on me that they did not count non-whites. So, I checked this out further. I found James' Civil War records and discovered that he served in the First Creek Mounted Volunteers, Co F. This meant that Nancy had to be part Creek. Her father, Jonathon Barrow, was Creek, and her mother, Elizabeth Fox was White. The story doesn't end there. James married Tillitha Lowe, the daughter of Simon Peter Lowe and Laura Ann Floyd. A search of their records showed that Simon Lowe registered as the father of a Creek Indian. However, Simon and Laura were both White. I found that Simon and Laura had another child, Simon Peter Lowe, Jr., who was born and died in 1858. Apparently, they adopted Tillitha, a full blooded Creek and this is why Simon registered as the parent of a Creek. I have checked the Parson-Abbott rolls, the Guion-Miller rolls, and have ordered a complete copy of the Dawes rolls. The Dawes rolls are what the Cherokee and Creek Nations use for enrollment. The problem is that while about 300,000 applied, only about 100,000 were accepted. The information I sent for will show everyone that applied. I will let you know what else I find out later.I have also made a contact in Madison Co., MT where James and Tillitha lived and died. They didn't have alot on them, so I helped fill the gaps. Rick.
