Hi Royce, I only have sketchy information, passed down through the family, the Hermione, was not the only ship sent to the area, it was apparently, a case of Sabre rattling, a show of force, not unlike todays conflicts, from what I have been told, the Sailors, Marines and Troops, were under orders not to inflame the situation in any way, the original problem was to do with Trade and Trade Routes and Opium . Unfortunately, I never met my Grandfather, he died before I was born, he was known as Sailor Jones and he arranged that his first male grandchild should receive his medals, I was given the China Medal on my 18th. Birthday. I have a vague recolection of a Film on the subject, I can not remember the name of it, but as it was a Hollywood film the historical accuracy would be in doubt. I hope this is of some use to you.
