According to my records Elizabeth Echols, wife of Fleming Bates (shown as head of household 1820 & 1830 microfilmed census of Habersham Co., GA), had a brother Darious Echols, one time Sheriff of Habersham Co., GA. They were issue of Joshua & Margaret Echols of Pendleton Dist., SC and formerly of VA. Note: the published abstract of the 1820 GA censuses omitted many names because the persons abstracting the records were not adept in reading the old handwriting. I have all of the extant 1820 GA censuses on microfilm in my home library; many, many names were excluded.
Pendleton Dist., SC Deed Book O, 1817-1820 page 349 indicates the following:
HEIRS: MARGARET ECHOLS, WIDOW OF JOSHUA ECHOLS, DEC'D...JOHN ECHOLS, DARIOUS ECHOLS, JAMES ECHOLS, JOSHUA ECHOLS, ABRAHAM ECHOLS, E. V. ECHOLS AND RICHARD BROWN, HEIRS OF JOSHUA ECHOLS, DEC'D. Lands adjoining Tugaloo River and lands of Lewis Bolston, except 20 acres conveyed to JOSHUA ECHOLS, JR. by MARGARET ECHOLS. 23 Octob er, 1818. Dated 31 Octob er, 1818. Witnessed by J. G. & R. H. Cleveland. Recorded 19 April, 1819.
I have a copy of the Echols Family History that was printed many years ago. The history is not well-documented; therefore I feel it leave much yet to be proved.
