Query: Have been told for years I'm a decendant from a Cherokee indian princess, but have never heard a name. She would have married (Bill)William Matthew Babb in the early 1800's, they had a son named David William Babb but he was called "Cherokee Bill". He, ("Cherokee Bill"), married someone with the intials "SS" born in June 1835, and Died June 10, 1902.

I recently found the above posting on an internet bulletin board. I was not able to contact the author and would like to set the record straight, if possible!!

First: There is no such creature as an Indian princess. When Pocahontas was taken to England as a curiosity, Queen Elizabeth I expressed a desire to meet her. It was completely impossible to introduce a commoner to the Queen; therefore, they dressed Pocahontas in a fancy, fake Indian costume and introduced her as a princess. After that, it became fashionable, in this county, to dress dead Indian ancestors in fancy costume and introduce them as princesses, but only if they were safely dead so that they could not embarrass anyone.

Second: There is no David William Babb, as far as I know. The first William M. Babb married a woman with both parents from England and the second certainly did not marry his grandmother.

A.       William M. (possibly Matthew) Babb (1790-1842) married Temperance Shipman (1792-after 1850) in Barren County, Kentucky 02 May 1808.

B.       William H. Babb (1811-1881) married Elizabeth Walker Bradley (1810- ? ) in Stoddard County, Missouri 03 December 1829. Their son, William Matthew Babb, states in a letter, to his niece, that Elizabeth’s mother was Mary Oxford, a full-blood Cherokee [he knew his grandmother but not his grandfather]. He also states that his grandfather was a blacksmith from Alabama and of Scotts-Irish descent. Another source says he was half Cherokee. I cannot verify either claim.
