Robert, You ask 1) "I was surprised to find duplicate muster rolls for the same period of time written in a different handwriting but otherwise identical. I would like to know the history of these muster rolls and why there were multiple copies." The obvious possibility is that the Canada Public Archives has originals, or possibly copies from the War Office papers, British Archives in Kew, and that the NJ Archives copies were transcibed from one or the other. The question should go to the respective Archives, if you can't tell from the handwriting which were the earlier documents/copies. 2) ". . . the muster rolls I have from 24 April 1781 to 24 June 1782 omit the location of where these muster rolls were recorded. On the other hand the book on the Southern Campaign by Murtie June Clark indicates the location as Charlestown, South Carolina. I would like to learn of any documentation of the Charlestown location and where Clark may have learned it." Ms Clark only indicates the location of one of the three rosters listing George Woodl(e)y as being Charlestown. Different places in SC are given for the two earlier ones. If you have not looked at Regimental documents you would find them of interest. Ms Clark is usually meticulous in explaining how she drew her conclusions. She probably explains this in the introduction to her book. In addition, if you obtained only copies of individual rosters, what you received may have omitted a cover page or the reverse of a document which *could* have noted a place written by whatever command person approved the payroll or muster roll. In either case, a deeper look into the actual records would probably answer your questions. Good hunting, Jade Notify Administrator about this message?
